Overcoming Shyness in Oral Presentation

Speaking in front of a crowd is often unnerving. People are afraid that they might forget something and they will look foolish. This can lead to shyness when presenting a report in front of the class. The good thing is that there are ways for you to overcome this shyness. With some practice and the will to succeed, you can give a good oral presentation without being shy.

You have to be well prepared for your presentation. Being well prepared makes you less likely to feel shy in front of a large group of people.

Practice always makes perfect. This is so much applicable to oral presentation. You can practice alone in your room and deliver your oral report over and over again until you are well versed and confident. You can also practice in front of a mirror so that you can see your facial expression, your hand gestures and your posture. This is also a good way to see how the audience will perceive you in front of the class. You can present your report in front of your friends. This will get you a little bit used to talking in front of people.

For back up in case you forget something, prepare your own note cards. Having them in your hands or pocket during the presentation can give you a little bit of assurance. This is what you need to gain confidence and dispel the shyness in you.

Have a positive attitude when you start your presentation. Being in high spirits can reduce the anxiety that you have and this will make you feel comfortable. Think that the audience is on your side and they are not the enemy. They want to hear you give a positive and good presentation.

Before starting your oral presentation you have to compose yourself, breathe deeply and remain calm. When you are already standing in front of the class, you can silently count to ten before beginning. This technique helps you to get used on being in front of the audience.
