Writing an Effective Conclusion for Your Essay

You know that your essay is complete if you have an effective and strong conclusion. Writing an effective conclusion gives the reader a lasting impression about your piece. If you are proving a point in your essay, this concluding remarks will be your last chance to convince your reader about what you are trying to emphasize in your essay. Here are some ways on how you can improve your conclusion in your essay.

Your conclusion should consist of a brief summary of your essay. However, do not include all the details because you do not want to sound as if you are just repeating your essay all over again. This does not make an effective conclusion. Summarize your arguments and your feelings in your conclusion.

Draw your conclusion from the arguments or the ideas you have presented in your essay. Your conclusion may be a suggestion on solving a particular problem. The important thing is that your conclusion must be relevant to your arguments in the essay. Two or three sentences will do for your concluding statements.

A good conclusion should remind the reader about the main theme or subject of the essay. So you have to restate the main idea again in your concluding sentences. Include the exact words of the main theme or idea on the first sentence of your conclusion.

For essays with a serious subject like poverty or AIDS, you can give a strong concluding remarks by using a relevant quote or end your essay on a personal note. For essays with light subjects, you can use an insightful conclusion or amusing ending remarks.

An effective conclusion should only be one paragraph with four to five sentences. It should be short and straight to the point. There would be more impact to the reader if the conclusion is given to-the-point.

The last thing that you should know is that you don't have to use the word "conclusion" or "In conclusion" in your sentence. You do not have to emphasize that it is your concluding remarks. It does not look good in the essay if you include that word.
