Writing Skill: Some Tips on Writing Effectively

The ability to write effectively is not only reserved for journalist, poets and novelist. Effective and good writing is a skill that can be learned by anyone. The good thing about writing is that you can develop this skill constantly because we communicate with people all the time. Here are some tips that can help you give some flavor to your writing style.

Your reader must understand most of the words that you use. You do not need to use technical and deep words because your reader does not always carry a dictionary with them. This may work on reports and formal writings because your professor or your colleagues would readily know what you are saying. Try to use simple and everyday words because you do not want to frustrate your reader. Most of your readers won't even be impressed by your huge vocabulary because they only want to receive the message you want to convey.

You want your writing to be memorable. So you have to avoid using cliche quotes. It is sometimes better to tell the message directly and to the point instead of using an old famous line that is used over and over again in cliche movies.

Always check your spelling and grammar. It is much easier now because the computer has grammar and spelling checks but it is still better if you double check.

After you finish your writing it is always better if you do your own proofreading immediately. You might have included some words that are not needed in the sentence or you failed to delete a certain phrase. Do not rely on your computer to check all the incorrect grammars and sentence construction.

Make your sentences short and concise. avoid wordiness as much as possible. One form of wordiness is when you are being redundant in your sentence.

If you want your sentence to have a stronger impact then you should use the active voice. Passive voice are usually longer but sentences in active voice are shorter and has a better impact on the reader.

Those are just some of the tips that you can follow for effective writing. Remember that you do not have to make your sentences flowery with huge vocabulary of words. If your reader fully understands what you are trying to say then you are considered a good and effective writer.
